Product Concept
SeedBuds are a speculative pair of earbuds designed for use in cities, to shift attention from urban ‘noise’ to non-human sounds.
Everywhere we go, in an urban setting, ‘artificial’ sounds are entangled with the ‘natural’. There is beauty in that coexistence and this hybridity is unavoidable, a consequence of city living and planning.
But when it comes to mental health, research shows that anthropogenic sounds can interfere with the benefits of exposure to some nature-based sounds. This difference in sound types matters for our nervous system.
Leaves rustling, birdsong, raindrops, or the chirping of insects are some of the grounding sounds that often fade into the background amid the buzz of city life. Beyond playing music, the earbuds feature a system that masks urban noise while selectively amplifying these more subtle sounds.
Treatment
The aim was to use background projections and patterns to visualise the interaction between the earbuds and their environment in an abstract way, and mimic an audio-reactive effect. The emphasis was on creating a contrast between a clean, polished, functional form and the softer, more organic environment that settles gently around it.
